Antler Bat Carving By Zuni Artist Justin Hustito SOLD

Justin Hustito is a Zuni carver whose work reflects a strong family carving tradition. This 3 1/2-inch stone carving was acquired on our 2026 trip to the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico. The piece stood out not only for rarity, but for its notably direct, graphic presence, with broad angular wings balanced by a softly carved face and chest. Incised Signature on base.

Penfield Gallery describes him as a young Zuni carver whose skills were shaped by his parents, Herbert Hustito and Elfina Lowsayatee, and notes his work in antler carvings of eagles, porcupines, and other creatures. While his public listings more often feature those subjects than bats, this bat carving fits naturally within the broader Hustito carving lineage, a family tradition that includes bat subjects as well.

This is the only bat by Justin Hustito we have encountered. Bat carvings remain an unusually specialized subject in Zuni art, created by only a small number of artists among the several hundred working in the community today.
