Phyllostomid Bats A Unique Mammalian Radiation - Product Image

Phyllostomid Bats A Unique Mammalian Radiation

With more than two hundred species distributed from California through Texas and across most of mainland Mexico, Central and South America, and islands in the Caribbean Sea, the Phyllostomidae bat family (American leaf-nosed bats) is one of the world's most diverse mammalian families. From an insectivorous ancestor, species living today, over about 30 million years, have evolved a hyper-diverse range of diets, from blood or small vertebrates, to consuming nectar, pollen, and fruit. Phyllostomid plant-visiting species are responsible for pollinating more than five hundred species of neotropical shrubs, trees, vines, and epiphytes--many of which are economically and ecologically important--and they also disperse the seeds of at least another five hundred plant species. Fruit-eating and seed-dispersing members of this family thus play a crucial role in the regeneration of neotropical forests, and the fruit eaters are among the most abundant mammals in these habitats.

Coauthored by leading experts in the field and synthesizing the latest advances in molecular biology and ecological methods, Phyllostomid Bats is the first overview in more than forty years of the evolution of the many morphological, behavioral, physiological, and ecological adaptations in this family. Featuring abundant illustrations as well as details on the current conservation status of phyllostomid species, it is both a comprehensive reference for these ecologically vital creatures and a fascinating exploration of the evolutionary process of adaptive radiation. 512 pages, 9 color plates, 46 halftones, 23 line drawings, 33 tables | 8-1/2 x 11. 2011. Edited by Theodore H. Fleming, Liliana M. Davalos, and Marco A. R. Mello.

Mola Bat Shirt

Produced by Batgoods, this beautifully printed T-shirt shirt design is based on traditional Mola art. Mola is the Kuna Indian word for blouse, but the term mola has come to mean the elaborate embroidered panels that make up the front and back of a Kuna woman's blouse. The Kuna Indians are the native people who live on small coral islands in the San Blas Archipelago along the Atlantic coast of Panama and Colombia. Molas are collected as folk art and can be viewed at some of the finest museums in the world like the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Traditional Mola designs feature any element from nature or even popular culture in an art form developed to use as decoration for clothing. Now Molas are used as wall art and other forms of decoration as well. 100% cotton, preshrunk.

Many Faces of Bats Coffee Mug

Fiona Reid's  "The Many Faces of Bats" original art of 89 different bats on a ceramic mug.

Fiona Reid's interest in wild mammals started at about age four, when she found a den of foxes near her home in Oxfordshire, England. This interest blossomed into a love of all fauna and flora worldwide. Fiona has a BA degree in biology from Cambridge University and an MSc in Animal Behaviour from SUNY at Stony Brook, New York. She has written and/or illustrated more than a dozen books on mammals, including: A field guide to the mammals of Central America and southeast Mexico (Oxford University Press) and a Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America (Houghton-Mifflin). For these two books which she both authored and illustrated, she captured and drew from life almost all the bats and small rodents. She also illustrated The Golden Guide to Bats of the World, Bats of Papua New Guinea, and Mammals of the Neotropics (volumes 1-3), and she coauthored and partially illustrated Wildlife of Costa Rica. Fiona also co-authored and illustrated Bats of Trinidad and Tobago, published in 2016. Fiona has worked part-time as an eco-tourist guide for 31 years, leading trips to numerous destinations worldwide. She has co-led tours for Bat Conservation International and the Organization for Bat Conservation, taking groups to Trinidad and Tobago, Africa, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Madagascar to study bats and other mammals. She holds the distinction of having captured and painted from life more species

Bat's Moonlight Feast

Illustrated by Carly Allen-Fletcher. Text by Gordon McMillan. The tube-lipped nectar bat is the pollinator of a pale, bell-shaped flower found in the Ecuadorian cloud forests. First discovered in 2005, the bat is the only known pollinator of a pale, bell shaped flower called Centropogon nigricans . Due to the length of the bloom, no other animal can reach the nectar which rests at the flower's base. This is the story of one such bat and her nocturnal search for this rare flower whose nectar sustains her.

Carly Allen-Fletcher is a freelance illustrator living and working in the Midlands, UK. She studied Illustration at Loughborough University. Her work explores the combination of digital painting and traditional media, creating images by layering graphic shapes with painted textures and handmade elements. She is inspired by nature and geometric forms. In 2015 she won a silver prize (1,000 pounds) from the UK Association of Illustrators in the "London Spaces and Places" category. Carly is also the author/artist of two board books, Goodnight, Seahorse and Goodnight Forest.
