""Tricolored bats were once among the most common bats in North America, ranging from the Northeastern US and Canada down to the Yucatan Peninsula. However, since the arrival of white-nose syndrome (WNS), tricolored bat populations have plummeted more than 90% in some regions. These bats are some of the smallest in North America, weighing a mere 4-5 grams (equivalent to a paperclip). Remarkably, mother bats often give birth to twin pups, each weighing as little as 1.5 g (equivalent to a postage stamp), and nurtures them during the warmer months when insects are plentiful. WNS affects bats primarily when they are roosted during their winter hibernation."

"The Mexican long-nosed bat is the only federally endangered bat in Texas. Pregnant mothers make an arduous 700+ mile migration every spring from central Mexico to Big Bend National Park, where they each give birth to a single pup. They rely on the nectar of agave plants to fuel their migration and successfully raise their pups. Unfortunately, agave habitat is being lost due to unsustainable land use, climate change, and wildfires, putting these bats at risk of extinction. Current conservation work is focusing on restoring agaves across the U.S. Southwest and Mexico to create a “nectar corridor” to protect these endangered bats for generations to come."

Fiona Reid's interest in wild mammals started at about age four, when she found a den of foxes near her home in Oxfordshire, England. This interest blossomed into a love of all fauna and flora worldwide. Fiona has a BA degree in biology from Cambridge University and an MSc in Animal Behaviour from SUNY at Stony Brook, New York. She has written and/or illustrated more than a dozen books on mammals, including: A field guide to the mammals of Central America and southeast Mexico (Oxford University Press) and a Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America (Houghton-Mifflin). For these two books which she both authored and illustrated, she captured and drew from life almost all the bats and small rodents. She also illustrated The Golden Guide to Bats of the World, Bats of Papua New Guinea, and Mammals of the Neotropics (volumes 1-3), and she coauthored and partially illustrated Wildlife of Costa Rica. Fiona also co-authored and illustrated Bats of Trinidad and Tobago, published in 2016. Fiona has worked part-time as an eco-tourist guide for 31 years, leading trips to numerous destinations worldwide. She has co-led tours for Bat Conservation International and the Organization for Bat Conservation, taking groups to Trinidad and Tobago, Africa, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Madagascar to study bats and other mammals. She holds the distinction of having captured and painted from life more species of bats than any other person.

The Pemba flying fox (Pteropus voeltzkowi) is a species of flying fox in the family Pteropodidae. It is endemic to the island of Pemba on the coast of Tanzania. The Pemba flying fox has a wingspan of 1.6 metres (5 ft 3 in) and is one of the largest species of fruit bat. It has a fox-like face, tawny fur, orange underparts and black ears, nose and wings. The adult weight is 400 to 650 g (0.9 to 1.4 lb), and the head and body length is 24.0 to 26.5 cm (9.4 to 10.4 in).
