This small (2 1/2 inches) carved wooden bat was purchased in Laos in the Golden Triangle region on the Mekong River across from Thailand where we visited in 2025. Made in naturaly dark hardwood, it features a compact stylized bat form and a carved leaf design on the back with inscription-like marks.
It is a regional market piece made for the tourist trade, though it has genuine hand-crafted character and a nicely finished folk-art quality. A charming small decorative carving from the Laos / Thailand border area, especially appealing for collectors of bat-themed objects and international folk souvenirs.
This 5 1/4-inch antler carving by Lewis Malie has a strong vertical, openwork composition, with six bats flying wingtip to wingtip along the natural contours of the antler. The pierced upper opening, narrow tower-like form, and alternating high and low relief give it the presence of a small sculpture rather than a simple single-animal carving. It is especially effective from multiple angles, with the bats emerging gradually as the piece is turned. Among Malie's bat carvings, grouped antler compositions like this stand out for their sculptural complexity and strong visual presence. Encised signature on base.
Lewis Malie is a Zuni carver known for finely worked animal sculptures in antler and bone, including bats. In a field of several hundred working Zuni artists, bat carvings remain a notably specialized subject, and Malie is among the relatively few artists working with them. His work is valued for its clarity of line, balanced composition, and lively presence.
This Egyptian marble bat by Zuni artist Eric Lonjose has a more architectural, sculptural presence than many small animal carvings. The warm, layered tones of the marble give the bat a natural depth, while the abalone shell base and turquoise chip accents add contrast and luminosity. At 3 1/4 inches tall, it reads as a substantial small sculpture, with the uncommon bat subject made even stronger by the refined pairing of marble, shell, and turquoise. 3 1/4 inches tall.
His bat carvings are especially appealing for their combination of subject matter, refined finish, and thoughtful use of material.
Bat carvings remain an unusually specialized subject in Zuni art, created by only a small number of artists among the several hundred working in the community today.
This 5 1/2-inch red cedar bat by Lewis Malie has a strongly sculptural, almost totemic presence. Rather than reading as a small animal carving alone, it rises vertically from an integral base, with the bat’s face and body emerging from a dramatic interplay of pale sapwood and deep red-brown heartwood. The natural color contrast of the cedar becomes part of the composition, giving the piece a striking architectural quality and an unusually bold visual presence. Engraved signature on base.
